Peeling the Onion – Finding Your “WHY”

Change is hard.

There, I said it…it is not easy and it takes motivation, time, patience and a very strong “Why” in order to create the changes in our lives that we desire. With that being said, understanding the steps to making a change can be very empowering and help you reach all the goals you have been striving for. The motivation to start changing our lives will most likely be fueled from one of two sources. Either we will be FORCED to make a change due to our circumstances being altered, or we get so disgusted with our circumstances that we CHOOSE to make a change to better our futures.

Disgust works very well as a strong motivator for making a change because it helps us make decisions that may be outside our comfort zone and we all know that we will not change anything if we are comfortable. Most of us know how easy it is to be lulled into getting “comfortable”…but it is imperative that we understand that absolutely no growth will happen when in the comfort zone. This initial step of change will be very easy at first because it will be fueled by your unhappiness with your situation, but what is going to keep the fire burning for the long haul?

Yes I said long haul. No lifestyle change is going to happen overnight. It is very important to come to grips with this duration of time so that you will have an understanding of the next thing you will need to continue your transformation. That next step is finding your “why”.

Finding your “Why” simply means that you have a very clear picture of why you are making this change and where you are going! Your “Why” needs to be specific. Many people will decide that they want to make a change based on a very vague vision of what future they prefer. This will not work. It is so very important to keep asking why until you peel back each layer, like an onion, to get to the root of the “Why”.

For example, many times I hear people say that they want to “lose some weight and tone up”, but that is a very vague goal. The next question to ask yourself would be WHY do you want to lose weight and tone up. Maybe the answer is to fit into my clothes better. But…WHY do you want to fit into your clothes better? Because I don’t look like I did 10 years ago and I feel bad about myself. Now we are getting closer to the root of your “Why”.

By peeling away each layer you will eventually get to the root of your “Why” and you will be able to stay motivated throughout the time period it will take to get there. This “Peeling Away at the Onion” method is a very important part of making any lifestyle change because you need to find the root cause of your disgust before you can ever be successful at making a lifestyle change. Just keep asking yourself “Why” until you get to the answer that hits you square in the heart. You will know when you have landed on your true “Why” when your “Why” makes you cry…..then you will do whatever it takes to make the changes needed!
